Digestion Science Experiment

Today we did an experiment to finish off our topic on the human digestive system.  We used crackers, lemon juice, porridge and water to make chyme in the stomach. We then looked at how long our small intestine is (about 7 metres!) and Mrs Hanson squeezed the chyme through some cloths and mesh to show what our intestine does to extract the nutrients from our food and then the waste that is is created and passed on through our large intestine.

Genzui's Amazing Guitar Skills

Genzui has an amazing talent! He performed so well in front of the class that Mrs Hanson thinks he should enter in the talent quest next year! Well done Genzui.

Swimming

Today we had our first fun time in the pool for the summer! Look at Amir having so much fun.

Drama with Miss Brosnahan

We had two great drama lessons with Miss Brosnahan. We listened to music and a great story then we had to move to the music at the same tempo as the music.  We had a lot of fun!

Making Pyramids

We made some great pyramids in maths.  Mrs Hanson gave us six skewers and some blu-tak and we were asked to build a pyramid using all six skewers.  Ben was first to work out how to do this.

We were then put in teams of four and were asked to combine our four pyramids to make one bigger pyramid.

It was such a great problem solving and team work challenge.

Cricket

Enjoying some lessons in basic cricket skills.

My super apple

We first drew an apple on a blank piece of paper. Then we got a magazine and ripped or cut the colour we liked and sticked the pieces on to the apple. When we finished we got a blank piece of paper and got a sheet of newspaper. After we got those two things we could only rip the pieces and glue it on to the piece of paper, this was the background for our apple. When we finished we got our teacher to cut out our apple and glue it on to our background. Then we were finished.

Our apple

We made our apples with papers and news papers. We first drew a picture of an apple, then we started to stick papers on our apple. After we finished our apple, we did our background.

Apple Collage

We made some wonderful ripped paper collage apples.

Our Visit from Lisa the Librarian

On the first Friday back this term we had a special visit from Lisa, who we all know as Miss Dam. Lisa is now working at Takapuna library and she came back to the middle syndicate to share some of the amazing books that we could look at or borrow from our local libraries.

We all really impressed by the augmented reality book. This book was special because you use an ipad to make parts of the book come alive!  Have a look at the great photo she sent of the dinosaur on Michael's hand!

Spot and Bo

Spot and Bo are special toys that we can bring home at the end of the week.

Every Friday Mrs Hanson chooses two special people to take home Spot or Bo. We have to try our best and be excellent all week and if we're lucky we might get to take one of the toys home.

We can take Spot or Bo with us where ever we go and we have to write about our adventures in their diary.

On Monday we share their diary with our class.

I wonder who will get to take them home today?........

Visualisation Activity

Mrs Smith taught us all about visualisation. She told us a story about the Nogard. The story was very descriptive and we needed to use our imagination to draw a nogard without looking at any pictures. Eventually we found out that a nogard is dragon! (Nogard is dragon spelt backwards).  It was amazing to see how all our drawings turned out and how similar they were.

Later in the week we then wrote stories with Mrs Hanson about our dragon. We were encouraged to use adjectives to describe our dragons.

Look out for future a future post of our published stories.

Milk in Schools

Last Friday was our first day of having milk at school. Every day we will get a free carton of cold milk to drink. Our buddy class visited us and showed us how to fold up our empty cartons ready to go in the special Fonterra blue bins. These bins are only for our cartons and straws and they are taken away to be recycled into different things such as books!

We have our milk around 10am each day after fitness. We drink our milk while we finish writing or while completing reading activities.

Hockey

This term we are lucky enough to have some special coaches come in and teach us basic hockey skills each Wednesday. This week was our first session and we were learning to hold a hockey stick correctly, dribble the ball, stop the ball and dribble in reverse.

The final even was a relay race between each of the the three Year 3 classes. Sophie, Baileigh, Hamza and Michael represented Room 17 and we won!
